How To Entice People To Comment On My New Technology Blog?

Discussion in 'Blogging' started by jvfconsulting, Aug 25, 2008.

We launched a new technology blog on our website located here. http://www.jvfconsulting.com/blog

We have some good blog posts with original content but we have not yet seen a single comment come through. To entice people to post on our blog we removed the nofollow function so all of the posts here will be dofollow. We thought that by enabling this feature we would definitely see some new posts, but nothing yet. Are we missing something? Does the comment section even work properly? We use captcha to ensure humans are hitting us, is this a deterrent?

You appear more to be selling a service (half your posts are about web designs you've done for a client) than blogging about the latest trends in technology...

I have to agree with mizaks. That was the first thing I noticed.

It may be to your benefit if you expound a little more about how the sites were actually wired. Maybe throw some code out there that would help others or how you designed a logo in photoshop, without giving away too many trade secrets of course.

I mentioned this in your technical thread already, you need to ping places like Technorati and Pingomatic. This will get your posts syndicated. You also need to get found, and the best way is to get listed with BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog and Bumpzee.

Since your blog is DoFollow, there is a large DoFollow Group at Bumpzee. It was started by Andy Beard and keeps growing everyday. A good group to get into. They do screen your blog before entry, so you may want to get all of your ducks in order before submitting.

It seems to be just about what you have done work wise? Maybe decide what you are going to focus on

While this is not a blog in web design, it does show how a Company blog can showcase their work and add some appeal.

    Roof Life of Oregon

They talk about their people, materials going into a roof, etc. They do not just focus on the roofs they constructed, in other words.

Don't expect lots and lots of comments. Look at your AwStats for your blog and see how long your visitors are staying for. For instance, on my blog, about 70% of my visitors are staying for less than 30 seconds. Do you think those visitors are actually taking the time to read a full post and think of a comment?

Usually only your dedicated followers will comment regularly. A few people might chime in but dont expect everyone who reads your blog to comment.

And one thing more. Mention the 'DoFollow' factor prominently in sidebar.

All of you are correct! I will start writing articles more focused on non promoting technology and SEO. Mentioning the DoFollow is also a great idea, Thanks!

Don't get me wrong. I think it is okay to promote yourself.

For instance, lets say that you developed a bitchin' image gallery in flash for a client. Promote the bitchin' image gallery and link to your clients website. Provide details about it (ease of use, speed, etc.).

Showcase your talents, not your client portfolio.

I've signed up for the following BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog and Bumpzee. BlogCatalog requires an authentication script. Is this permanent or can I remove it after approved? Are there other good services like these I can sign up for?

At BlogCatalog, only a link back, widget, or meta-tag is required to verify blog ownership.

Use the META tag version for BlogCatalog. It resides in your Head section with your blog Id.

Go to http://www.blogcatalog.com/account/buttons and scroll all the way to the bottom. You will find the code there.

I think you will have to reverify your blog (not sure).

One other step to getting a lot of comments is to engage the online community via twitter, and also possibly hosting some sort of comment contest to get the ball rolling, also of course the more subscribers you have to your rss feed the more people will comment, and if your blog isn't interesting enough nobody will comment.

I have not heard of that before. I checked over at Bumpzee and cannot see anything about it there either.

What I meant was that I checked my Dashboard for the ability to hand out an invite code. I could not find one.

I do know that back in June, Scott was disparate about the number of splogs that were signing up at Bumpzee. It was out of control. Evidently it is a closed system now. Which is too bad.

He also mentioned revamping the site, and hopefully this problem will be taken care of and get back to normal.

Start posting some p2p news. Its a hot topic not covered too thoroughly except on a few sites.

Use the CommentLuv plugin and place a button on your sidebar indicating it is used. Coupling this with dofollow should get you comments provided you have sufficiently engaging content and visitors. :)

If he has linkworthy content then I am sure people will link to him irrespective of what any toolbar says.
