How to edit content of a website, help?

    Hi!

I need to edit some pages of my website - pages like my Homepage and About me, as I'm looking forward to add more virtual services.

Is there any way I can do this by myself instead of hiring a paid professional? I mean, of course it will be more convenient that way, however it is costing me so much as there are always constant changes or there will be just simple/minor text editing needed over time.

I've read some tutorials that I can do the editing using some editors, any advice?

Also, I'd like to first make a back up of my original site before I make any changes to it, how can I properly do this?

That's true! My favorite is Komodo Edit... Do give it a try. You will get addicted to it ;) ... But, the thing is as the TC is new to web page editing, so he might not be able to hand code them... Dat's why i suggested DW!

Hi swashata & RaPeRbOy, thanks for the suggestions. (uhm..) Will it be too much if I ask for the procedures to do that?

I mean, before I can actually do the editing with the DW, I think I still need to do some transfer from the "folders" on my host thru ftp, right? What particular folders? Then after that, what's next?

As I edit the pages, will I be affecting (or much worst, ruin) the other pages? (Other pages refers to those pages that have 'display codes' made for 'buy product' function.

I'd use the integrated file manager and editor from the cpanel. (the control panel of your hosting)

Not much of responses here however thanks to those who did though. :)

Still looking/researching around for answers and I thought it would be helpful to others (who have the same question) to post what I found so far, so -

Creating a backup of a website:

We can do this by using an FTP. Once connected, you will see 2 site panes. One is the Local site pane (which shows your computer folders and files) and one is the Remote site pane (which displays the files and folders on your web server).

In the remote site pane, navigate until you are in the folder where your website files are kept. This is usually a folder named "www", "public_html" or even "htdocs".

Create a folder on your desktop where you want to put the web files. From the remote site pane, drag the "www" folder and make sure that you select all the files and folders so that you preserve the directory structure of your website. Otherwise, if you change things around or only selectively download files, you may find that you have a lot of broken links and broken images when you edit and publish your website in the new editor.

There, now we have successfully created a backup copy of our website files on our computer.

    2. Editing a website by using a WYSIWYG editor: I'm still working on the learning curves of using Kompozer. Will keep you updated.

Hi digiquest, you can find a lot of your answers on Youtube - especially if you're a visual person like I am. The procedures you're looking to do may not be difficult, but do take quite a bit to write out to explain. But if you can watch someone do them, it may cut the learning curve and help you accomplish what you desire to do some what faster.

    Best wishes to you!

    Anita

Connect FTP and drag the particular page(which one you want to change) to desktop, that will be a backup of the page, then the live page will not get affect. After that use any editors (I use scite to edit) to change the content. Once you completed the editing you can see the preview, if you get satisfied with that then replace the edited file with the live page using import option in the FTP connector.

    Hi again!

I think I kinda getting the loop on how to edit a particular web page using Kompozer. I have some questions though -

    1. When I edit the text content of a particular page (and I mean only the text content), and then I save it, will it remove the links of the navigation as well as the links on the images there is on the page?

    2. I plan to make an additional navigation, and since it is in the navigation, it should be seen on every page of the website, how to do this properly?

    Help?

It is hard to answer these question without looking at the HTML code. Your best bet is to learn how to code basic HTML if you do not want to hire someone. You can find some tutorials at w3schools.com

@walterbell2331 & skynet88: it's an interesting thought. Checked the website, and I think I might just go get myself some education with web building! Thanks for the recommendation, didn't knew that site existed before.

@ajinkyax: wow! thanks for the very kind act. That would really be very helpful, at least in my situation. I gotta say though that it's kinda embarrassing to just accept it.

Hmm.. gives me an idea - since learning all those webbie language takes time, I may as well as consider someone to do it for me at the meantime. Aside from "editing the text content" of my site, I am considering some additional requirements. Say, maybe I can list them for you, and then you can quote that? I have tried a few for quotations, but I find them a little expensive.

Let me know what you think.

Hi! you might use online editor, which is provided with your hosting control panel. This way will avoide uploading/downloading of files and also WYSIWYG editor will help you to edit visually.

online editors are good i prefer using dreamweaver connected to the ftp and do live edits mostly for php and asp pages. I would suggest get some good tutorials and you'll be fine there isn't any need go hardcore from day one web designing is fun so have fun creating the pages.
