First of all you must have good number of followers. Update interesting tweets so that more and more people follow you. After that you can promote your site as well..

You can start by following people that you thing would be interested in what your site has to offer
... then create some interesting tweets ... after more and more people start following you, you can start promoting your site as well

there was some tools out there awhile back where you could basically add a whole wack of people. i'm not a big twitter user, so i can't really testify how it works or if its frowned upon. but i do know those tools are out there. i'm sure lots of people are already into it.

gotta have the flow of people following you to make it worth while though.

It is true that you need followers first to make it worth your while. Here is a link to help find and manage followers:

Also, to ensure that you don't come off as spammy, make sure to add tweets about other things than just your business or website. Hope this helps, good luck!

We all know Twitter can be a powerful social networking tool, but it appears as if most people don't know how to use the tool properly. Now not all online businesses will benefit from Tweeting, but if you can maintain a list of relevant followers, you can effectively market to thousands with a click of a button. Try following people with industry keywords in their profile and you'll start getting people following you back. Now for the big part... update with INTERESTING information and links to keep the interest going.

    - I recommend you not to use automatic feeds when posting your tweets. People seem to lose the interest if they see notes like "Posted by tweetfeeds".
    - Also, try to write short briefs of what you want to say, then provide a link. Don't type only the first words from an article.
    - Pay attention to replies and answer them all. If you ignore DM's or replies people could unfollow you.
    - Update your tweets regularly. A twitter covered by dust is not interesting.
    - A good practice is NOT to follow your followers automatically. Only follow manually and try to follow those with interesting tweets.

Generally, you learn from mistakes, so play with different strategies.

Well, to respond your concern about spamming, you have to be clever when promoting your commercial stuff. Remember not to make deceptive promises when promoting something. People run away from "how I became rich over the night".

PS: you can follow me as well

make sure you target the right people

I have 3 twitter accounts which are based on 3 areas of interest to me - and have a number of sites based on that interest (e.g. rugby, recruitment, writing). Whilst I havent used the writing one much for the wother two i find that by interacting constantly with breaking news and talking to others then it becomes very easy to put up self serving links in your own tweets - in fact sometimes it is better to do it obviously as your followers who like you will help by retweeting if they think you are worth it.

interaction is the name of the game. Self serving is fine but it needs to be a small part of an overall stratergy based around developing a loyal following, not based around trying to get as many links into the conversation stream as you can

    Followers is the key.

Getting high number of followers can help a lot in marketing.
Check out my blog featured link on how you can easily increase your followers, it helped me to get more than 200 followers in few weeks time.

Also, anyone have idea of what to post in twitter than can be very interesting to attract more followers?

    1. I can only think of new blog posts.
    2. any addition?

IN twitter? to attract more followers form within twitter really you need to get retweeted and answered by people with lots of followers, so interaction with them.

getting followers for twitter is often easier off line from within blogs, sites etc. Also consider creating a 'twitter landing page' introducing yourself and funneling people to your twitter account and so following you. you can then link to this from comments, article writing etc

You are right, Nick! You have to target your followers. I have only one account, a personal one but I put in my Bio all the keywords related to my profile. I get about 10-15 followers a day and I think most of them are looking for targeted profiles to follow.

For a hint, I use this Bio description: Interests: money, photography, web 2.0, SEO, internet marketing, affiliates, web design, blogs, joomla

Most of my followers are related to one or more of my keywords. And I have the advantage of being almost on top of their searches with nearly 900 followers.

Twitter is a long-term tool. You should continually build your audience and always provide good content. You don't need to spend hours and hours staying involved, a few minutes each and every day and you'll quickly gain an audience.

I'm putting together a short report on twitter. it'll be done next week. pm me and i'll send you a draft.

Exactly, this perfectly captures the importance of making use out of twitter. A lot of people are looking to jump on the bandwagon and not put forth any real effort to getting something developped from it. But then again this could be a good thing since it would quickly route out anyone actually just looking to make a quick buck from it :D
