The first thing you should do is asking yourself "is your application really good" when you compare it with similar applications. Because bad reviews for your application is always cause you problem at ranking in Google Play. The ranking at Google Play is related with popularity more than backlinks. So you need some good reviews and you need to make people access your product and download it. To get popularity: You should advertise your product with different niches (which will get unique visitors) on Facebook Pages and Twitter accounts. You can get some ideas for niches on Google Adwords. There are many famous application review sites on internet. You can ask them review for your application. You can also ask these sites to add your product to alternative lists of some famous applications. (such as Facebook Messenger alternatives or Hola VPN alternatives, etc.) Open a web site for your application and do a regular SEO for your webpage. If you give people good & working app service, good support service, good features, your application will already increase on the Google Play. However there's no magic for increasing your rank on play at the moment.
