Not quite. Negative SEO is pushing a competitor's site down instead of forwarding one's own in search results.

It is in fact possible, but with well-established sites with a strong backlink profile it's practically unrealistic.

Interesting thread this one. I'd never looked at SEO in such a light that people could take it and turn it into something negative against their competitors.

As stated above, it is a very unethical way of doing things, and probably more effort than carrying out positive SEO on your own site, but it makes you wonder what's really going on out there!

I think if you won't choose right keywords than ranking is down self.

WTH would spammers want to link TO your forum? Spammers would want to put posts on your forum that link OUT to their sites that they are promoting. Linking TO your forum does nothing for ths spammer.

In regards to the OP's question, I can understand "why" someone would want to cause another site's rankings to drop. Many times on page 1 of the SERPs when you search for a brand name you'll find sites like consumercomplaints.com or other review sites that show up there with negative comments about a brand. You want to bump them off of page 1.

Rather than waste your time spamming them with lots of links in hopes of hurting their rankings (which may actually backfire and HELP their rankings), there are 2 approaches that I've thought of that IMO are better:

    1) Pick other sites that are on page 1 and 2 that rank slightly worse than the offensive site but have good things to say about your brand... and link to them from good sites w/ link text of whatever brand term the offensive site is ranking for. This should raise the rankings of the other sites from page 1 and 2. Moving those sites up in the rankings will push the offensive sites down.

IMO this is probably the "easiest" approach to displacing an offensive site in the SERPs since those other sites you'd be promoting are already ranking well. It should take the least amount of link building effort to make them rank a little better. However, your site gets no direct benefit from it other than good press.

    2) Promote pages on other domains that you own or buy new domains to promote for the brand keywords that the offensive site is ranking for. Wouldn't it be great to have 8 or so domains that you own occupy all 10 spots on page 1 of the SERPs anytime someone searches for your main domain or brand? Of course, if the keyword phrase for the brand is even moderately competitive, this will take time and a substantial link building effort to make several new domains that you own rank well for a particular keyword.

Don't waste your time trying to "Google Bowl" another site. Google has made it VERY difficult to do so. It's next to impossible to hurt a site with inbound links.

Now OUTBOUND links are a totally different thing. If the site is a forum or blog that allows people to post do follow links then you could get them penalized by posting lots of outbound followed links to blackhat sites known to violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines. Once enough outbound links to bad neighborhoods are in place you could simply report a few of the outbound neighborhoods and the offensive site. They would all likely be penalized.

Its a valid question, we should all be aware of what external influences that can be detrimental to our work.

I would never do it, but we need to look out for people doing it to us.

It could easily backfire and help there website.

Hmm.. If I understand the question correctly it refers to SEO and not limited to 'bad' links... what happens when a competitor uploads a site which is exactly like yours in every aspect? Text, tags, etc.?? Will both get penalized? Will the SE check the domain age and also on waybackmachine to ensure which one is the real one and which one is the knock-off? Do such activities create chances for you getting banned from SEs?

Hmm Interesting post Felix I think search engine will consider Domain age in this point, and if they find something wrong they will definitely make that Domain Banned from Search engine Listings.
It may not effect, as you have already checked out all the posts in this thread that do mean to say if a Domain or Website is trusted and respect in search engines its ranking may not affected easily by these. If it could be possible than everyone should make duplicate of top most branded sites, to get listing in search engines.
That was my point of view, about your query.
    Thanks

2 years ago one of my client asked me to do for his competitors. Theoretically It's not impossible to destroy a site with do some negative SEO, But ethically I didn't. Like Doctor give life to their patient not death.

To become a good SEO you must not do such activity for your satisfaction.

Cheers and Enjoy your SEO career.

do you even run websites? anyone that has set up a few dozen forums I'm sure will have run into this phenomenon, spammers link to you all the time, don't ask me why, maybe they dump a bunch of links to try and cloak their spamsites with legitimate sites, sometimes they will make a spam post and link to that post to try to get some credibility for the post, etc.

think before you dismiss something you don't necessarily understand and then all these people say "great post"
