I've never actually tried to market with twitter, but I do know of a resource that may be able to help you. It is a step-by-step guide that starts with developing a twitter marketing strategy, to configuring you twitter account, branding you twitter page, setting up a follower incentive, promotion of you twitter profile, implementing your strategy by building a follower list, managing you twitter account as well as tracking. I have actually used it, but I've used their Article Marketing resource and have found it works extremely well. I wouldn't suggest focusing too much time and effort on twitter, because you won't make much money with just twitter alone. Just use it as an extra marketing tool. Best thing to do is to just tweet things of interest to your followers every so often. E.g. links to your websites, links to affiliate products, interesting articles or blog posts you've written (make sure they contain a link back your website), etc. But just make sure you avoid spamming your followers with useless crap.
I wouldn't do direct selling on twitter. I would post relevant topics on the market and your product/service (indirect) and create a group of steady followers
Twitter is very social, so the best way to build your twitter list is interacting with others. Ask people to follow you in your signatures (email, forum, blog post signatures). This will increase your following. To actually make money from Twitter, don't focus on just selling, focus on providing value, with links to helpful free information. Occasionally, you can self promote, but don't over do it.
Twitter needs to be used as a way to communicate. Act like a normal person and over time you'll build followers whom will eventually become your regular customers.
