How to do link exchanging properly

What are good strategies to go about while doing link exchange? That will help you gain visitors? (as I'm sure there can be a downside to it?)

First make sure you have a link page. Make sure that a link to the link page is on the first page of your site.

Most sites like your link page to be spidered by google already. Make sure all links to your site direct links not redirects. Some use redirects i do not bother with any site that uses them.

Next try to find sites or directories with same topic of your site. Then try to get as many links as you can. Do not have more than 50 links on any links page. If you have mutiple pages make a links page directory linked from first page. Then add each link page to that page no need to have 30 urls for link pages on front page. I usualy like 30 links on a links page.

Yes, that's the only problem I'm thinking about.. because if the traffic doesn't convert well, whats the point of link exchanges (doesn't help with PR either)

 

Reciprocals are of low value to Google because they are termed as artificial means to boost ranking.
