Use alt text for your images, and in Google Webmaster Tools, in the Settings section, there is an option to check a box next to "Include my site in Google Image Labeler". Check that.

Yeah include your site to Google Image Labeler via Google Webmaster Tools.
Include your keywords in image file names.
    Use keyword-rich alt text.
    Write keyword-rich image captions.

There are several ways to optimize your images for search including - relevant alt text, relevant file naming and proximity to relevant content.
Placing an image amidst thematically focused content seems to increase the images chance of ranking for words relevant to the pages content. In addition, avoid placing alt text on minor/small images.

In addition to the above advice, get a Google Webmaster Tools account and add your site to "Google Image Labeler". It's in the "settings" tab.

Image Optimization mainly depends on how well the page is optimized.
Additionally, you can use alt and title tag for the image.
