Throw it into Majesticseo.com and see what kind of backlinks they have. Are they coming from high power sources? How many do they have? Do they have any Edu/Gov links?

Check the domain and page authority. High DA/PA is going to be tough to beat.

What's the domain age? Older sites are harder to beat.

Don't for get your On page content. Rankings are about relevance and content more than links. Then be sure the right content is indexed by serp's for actionable text. monitor traffic the website to ensure low bounce rate and high time on site.

I suggest you use Long Tail pro software. It really makes a good analysis of competition and also finds great keywords to rank for.

I use ahrefs and it works perfect for me. All the info you need... Don't forget that it's not enough to check their backlinks only! ;)

    Hi Rajesh Galgalikar,

The things to monitor, look at, and analyze while watching your competitors are numerous. I would say that, beside backlinks of course, the most important things are:
    • Amount of traffic

    • SEO and SEM information

    • Display advertising

    • Contextual advertising

    • Demographics

    • Social media mentions: Twitter, Facebook, etc.

    • Mentions from other websites

    • And also competitors’ website names of your competitors
All the metrics I mentioned above are provided by a company I work with, which is called Follow. You can download Follow here: http://follow.net/?utm_source=internal. This is a competitive intelligence tool for tracking and analyzing websites.

Just to let you see how Follow works I decided to include a few screenshots below, of book reviews website Goodreads.com. This is what Follow came up with.

    Traffic Estimates

    Top Keywords

    Text and Banner Ads

    Demographics

Follow shows much more that what you can see above. It can be installed as a toolbar on your browser, but you can get access to statistics on the a web-based platform, too. You can open an account for free with Follow, even though there is the choice to more advanced paid plans.

Closely monitoring several sites takes a lot of work, but Follow can be set up in a way you’ll be notified when the sites you want to monitor do anything new online. As I said, there is a free version you can download and install immediately. Go to Follow.net: http://follow.net/?utm_source=internal, give it a try, and let me know what you think.
