Competitor analysis in general? I'm sure there are more professional means but the least you can do is do some research on your own. Google the niche of your new website and see what they are doing.

Seo Quake is a tool I use a lot, it gives you the page rank, and the number of backlinks of the top 10 sites on the search engine.

I'd find the top 10 based on a keyword, then do a Yahoo backlink check to see where they are getting links from. You might find a lot of them are free to use. Please also check their title tags to see if they might have a better onsite score than your client does.

Yep use Yahoo Site Explorer, run your competitors and see where they are receiving the majority of their back links...and then just get more than them!

For competitor analysis, go for seo quake as it will provide you with all the important things like the competitor meta tags, page rank, back-links and some on-page work that he/she has done on their site.
