How to distinguish between keywords and keyphrases?

How does a search engine bot distinguish keywords from compound keywords and keyword phrases? For example, if a search engine bot encounters the words search engine optimisation while crawling a webpage, how many (compound) keywords does it count? Will search, engine, optimisation, search engine and search engine optimisation each be counted or only search engine optimisation? Is it possible to "force" a search engine bot to treat several consecutive words (compound keywords or a keyphrase) as one, for example by placing tags around them?

    I don't think they can.
I can't, this is one of the most secretive parts of the algos.
It gets really hard at this point.
The algo is looking not only for anchor text, but also the context of the link, that is the page title of the inbound link, and the metatags etc.
Thus I would say that there is no need to force the bot? (help me here?)
Just write naturally, since anything unnatural tends do harm.
Need the question clarifed a bit further really.

Grüezi! Cheers for your reply. With no one answering my question I already suspected it may be a tough question.
When going through the keyword density list of this thread I encountered some odd compound keywords and keyword phrases, for example "a search engine", "keywords and" and "it possible to force". These are clearly not meant to be counted, though "search engine optimisation" is. So I was wondering whether placing tags such as <span>...</span>, <a>...</a>, <h1>...</h1>, etc., around compound keywords or keyword phrases could ensure that only these are treated as proper keywords by search engine bots. Does this work?

Ok Let's see if I can explain this at least in part.

OK using your example (Which I happen to already be targeting)

    Search Engine Optimisation

Here is what I did to get Page 1 on Google for the search term

    Hire seo writer

    I then wanted

    hire Google seo writer
    hire the best seo writer
hire the very best seo writer
hire the number 1 seo writer

If you Google "hire the best seo writer" (Please check out the kd-mains.com site you will find and take a look at the site (and it's text content) to see how it is done)

Then if you Google "hire the very best seo writer (I am first on Google)

All you need to do is construct your sentences to include your keywords and you do this by writing the most relevant info for the search term in question

Targeting keyword strings of Search phrases by incorporating them in your text content in a readable way that is also search engine friendly.

    Hope that helps?

I guess you're right. Understanding the search-engine algorithm is indeed a tough one.

    What!

    A Keyword is

    lets say

a product or service or perhaps some info you want

a key phrase is the string of words you use to find that product/service/info

Was that not clear from looking at my kd-mains.com site from my last post?
    To outline more clearly

    Keyword (well sort of)

    SEO

    key phrase

    Hire SEO

    or

    For a true word example

    Keyword

    Hosting

    Keyword phrases

Get hosting - get hosted - getting hosting - getting hosted
