Hi I"m new to domaining but am very interested in this topic. How does a domain name get appraised for its value? I mean, I"ve seen strange names like ottito.com or something like that at sedo and ppl are bidding for it. Can anyone pls give me a little advice on this? thanks

That depend on the name and the top-level domain like .com, .net etc, depending on this a domain name can valued $30 or $3 million, for example Vodka.com sold out recently for $3 million!

The deal was brokered by Sedo.

There are many factors that determines the value of a domain such as traffic, page rank, keywords, length, pricing of comparable domains etc.

Base on only an appraisal of "just" the name: shortness of name, how catchy/rememberable it is, no special characters.

Based on the name/traffic: same as above but PR, traffic, links, etc. oh and age of it too.

Well, to be honest, no one can accurately determine what a domain may be valued at.

If you're just looking at the name itself, minus the traffic and the revenue it generates, then valueing a domain name is hard. It's really all about whatever someone will pay for it.

However, if you look at the revenue a domain brings in then it depends on how that money is made, parking or content site, how consistent is the revenue, and then how likely the revenue is to stick around.

I just wrote a thread about this similar topic here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=236474.

Also, traffic can be of value, even if the name isn't making any money. Getting eyeballs is worth money to someone somewhere.

Its difficult to say without knowing the exact letters of the domain name. Your best bet would be to do some research on recently sold domains that are similar to yours. DNJournal has a lot of domain sales figures that you can look through.
