First off, I understand that no one but Google can ultimately lead to their demise. The purpose of this thread is to propose a method of taking away some of their power.

A vast majority of Google's revenue comes from Adwords placed on their search results and Adsense publisher pages, right? Making them a glorified (but useful) Yellow Pages.

What if there were no listings in the yellow pages? What if there were fewer sites on the Google search results pages, news feed, or image search? If Google search results slowly became less complete, and another engine had all of those missing sites, wouldn't that change search habits?

We (webmasters, site owners, etc) own the results Google provides. Without us, there is no Google.

What if there was a co-op like search engine/community for site owners, where members share in the profits, but are required to:

    • remove their sites from the Google index
    • Use the co-op engine for searches
    • Use the co-op ad system (publishing/posting)
    • Encourage others to do the same

    Crazy enough to work?

Obviously members wouldn't pull from Google until the engine was fully established. And to get non-members to boycott Google, they would be offered a generous return on their ad publishing revenue (50% or more), as long as they aren't using adsense or allowing Google to index their site.

    Digg it

First of all, I doubt this would work. It would only work if mega sites started to join, which would never happen.

Secondly, any webmaster getting traffic from Google would be crazy to de-index. You'd have to pay me pretty big bucks to get me to de-index.

Third, why hate Google so much? Sure, they have policies that are easy to dislike. But many companies do. And even if you could get rid of Google, other search engines will either have equally aggravating rules, or will not be high quality.

Fourth, if Google started hurting, they could just dis-regard your robots.txt file and index your site anyways. I don't think Google is legally required to obey your robots.txt file.

    Just my two cents. :)

errr...why would anyone wants to do that?

    jealousy?

hehe.. that idea would need a lot of people to work together, etc.

One other way to beat google is..

make another company 100% better than google - a very hard thing to do too.

But google also starts in someone's basement and their mission is to be 100% better than Yahoo.

They succeed. Why shouldn't anybody else succeed if they can?

If you look at the number of threads on this forum (and others), you'll see definite issues w/ Google. I'm fine with them, to be honest.

I just like the idea of a co-op; web search by webmasters... some healthy competition that hopefully will draw interest from some of the other engines out there.

Really, the google search engine has helped many people. Google as a company itself has helped people (ex. adsense people with revenue etc.)

As it turns out, I happen to get good traffic from Google, and I also make a little bit of money from Adsense. I also use GMail, the best email system out there.

So, tell me why I want to destroy them?

That'd be much worse than Google. You let webmasters run the search, you're giving webmasters the keys to spam and not having anyone stop them.

No offense, but that is the most load of bull I have read, I left webmastering for 2 months and this is my first thread I am replying to.. but no webmaster who is ranking no.1 on google for amazing search traffic will give away that just to get rid of Google's power. There is no stopping Google, it'd be like a 500 man army against America.

    Not happening dumbass.
