How to define site age

I am looking to seo a website soon, and I am wondering how the search engines determine a sites age. I am looking to make the site on a good and short dropped domain, and I am wondering if it is by domain, then is it by the time it was first registered or last registered? Thanks

There is probably more than one value involved, but I suspect the most important one is the date the search engine first indexed that site (possibly being reset if they domain drops). The actual registration date on the whois may also be a factor, and I think I'm right in saying that one of Google's patent applications stated they would also take into account how far into the future a domain is registered for, although from what I can tell it doesn't make that big a difference (if any).

I think search engines will take many of those dates into account, but the more important ones will be

date of first appearance in the search engine
date of last update to the site
date of first incoming link to the site
date and rate of increase in incoming links
    date of last incoming link

Thanks both of you for your answers. I will rep you both. Anyway, I went ahead and got my domain, chess8.com, to use as a type of chess related blog and a chess learning area. I'm looking forward to running this site as this is the will be the first time I am creating a site that I have an enthusiastic passion for the subject.

Imo domain creation date is another factor that main search engines look for.

Many places such as Snapnames dont actually "drop" the domain and if you use the drop catching service, the domain you snag will retain its original creation date.

I believe this is looked at, as I snagged a 1 year old domain using drop catcher and kept it parked for a year. When I developed it early this year it was 2 years old. I promoted it heavily, lots of directory submissions, etc and did not get sandboxed.

However, I believe the original index date is a better factor.

Do you think google is going to give you credit for registering a domain and sitting on it for two years before using it?
