How to decide if a topic will have a decent audience

Hi. I have a topic that i was thinking of creating a site on, however, i am unsure if it will attract a decent volume of traffic. My question is: how can i tell how large the audience of a topic is? I dont want to go creating a site if there are only very few people interested.

    All help greatly appreciated.

    - check google trends to see if people really search for that topic.
    - check overture bid tool to see if advertisers are paying for that keyword. (it doesnt mean anything, but generally you shouldnt launch a site with no advertisers bidding on your keywords.)

you should hunt for topics with low search results but high search volume.

i think you should not just consider trend , you should consider competition for that trend too ... Always go where trend/competition ratio is high ... for example there must be 1 million serarches for perticular keyword with 100000 websites so T/C ratio =10 for other it may be 1000 ... go for something that have high T/C ration while choosing niche .

I need a little help interpreting the google trends. For example, take this "chemistry, physics" search:

From that, i can compare the search volume of each, and see that they are approximately the same across the timeframe, but how is that going to help me, just by comparing two words? Is there any scale to these graphs?

you dont have to compare two topics.
for example, only enter youtube, and see a critically increasing trend. by looking at that, you can start a "youtube insider" site. (only if you work at youtube lol)

if you would like to compare anyway:
you should be more specific. your topics are too general...

for example, try comparing astrophysics with quantum physics.
analyze the results and select your topic accordingly.

Ask yourself "Can I generate enough content MYSELF everyday to get traffic?" if you can say yes, then almost any niche topic will do that is not overly done by others.
