How to deal with duplicate content?

I got a website with content generated by users, where they post their business, buying/selling stuff.
The thing is they also post on other similar websites, so this generates duplicate content.
My website suffered a penalty some months ago and dropped down for the main keyword, also in serp, and I removed everything that I thought might be suspicious, but how should I do to not get a penalty for duplicate content? (who i think was the main reason).

All those websites with the same content seems fine, except mine.
If I blend one post adding, the most 10 recents posts, will that help, any other ideas?

try to change their titles, keep the content as it is, add a specific intro like: here's what User298 had to say about TITLE.... that might help

Hmm...I am not sure if your actual issue is about duplicated content. This is pretty common behavior and do happens to every forums website, including here. Even the thread itself is duplicated but the reply and other participation won't be exact 100% similar.

If I were you I would try to write some unique content related to the forums topic and make then feed on the forums homepage. This could help decrease a chance for being duplicated.

as Sxperm said I don't think that's the problem.... Yahoo and Google themselves would've been penalised long time ago as they draw their news from other sources.

How can you be so certain that 'duplicate content' was the only reason for your drop? Did your site get back to its position immediately as soon as you addressed this issue in the past?

Sometimes we tend to single out something due to our own annoyance for the same while the exact reason for the mishap lies somewhere else! :(

If "All those websites with the same content seems fine, except mine.", then I think maybe it is not the content that got you penalized. Why not check your links and find out whether you have linked to bad neighbors or violated some other rules.

users do these regularly but this doesn't mean it will be the cause of penalty. there should be something else.

For me, duplicate content doesn't have total negative effect on your rankings. There are lots of duplicate content on the internet but they still rank high on Google.

I agree with everyone here who said duplicate content happens and even some of the big sites have it. What if Google determines a site who is most likely to be the source of the article and not penalize them? Crazy thought, but an idea. If they did do that it wouldn't be right!

I'd suggest removing ALL duplicate content as Google will always penalise you for it ...
