How to de-optimize?

    Hi,

I think our site (none in the sig) has been hit by a google penatly as we have many overly optimized. The areas where we may have over done it are:

Back link (using lots of anchors with the same text)
On page (H1, H2, body, title, meta all the same text)

Obviously we can change the on-page stuff quite easily. Its the back links were having a problem with.

Can anyone think of a way we can address this? How long will google penalise us for?

    Thanks in adv!

I can just tell with SEO experience... We are much lower than we should be for some words and when i look at other sites above us they shouldn't be..

create a load more backlinks with none anchor keyword sets

you should aim for about 20 - 30 % of your links having your main keyword but spread them out.

just get a load of lionks with click here or some other random text.

maybe go for a new set of keywords even.

i think you will find that this is not due to your backlinks though

    many other things to consider

I would say you just need to balance out the anchor links with other ones. At least 50/50, I'd say.

I have the similar question about this. I know anchor text from external link is important to determine our keyword, but what to do when we want to move to a bigger keyword for our site? We can't tell all people who gave us backlinks to change our anchor text...

The key is to build them up evenly. You should target quite a few different keywords from the beginning. If you're already heaviliy weighted on one keyword, stop building links with that keyword until you have caught up with some other ones. You also need to make sure that you're getting quite a few links with your plain domain name since many links will natually occur that way.

As long as you get some links with different anchor texts you'll be alright! That sort of penalty isn't permanent.

No "blackhat"... Its one of 2 things I feel:

    1) Built too many backlinks with the same\simliar anchor text (unnatural).

    2) OTT on on-page SEO.

To be honest I feel its the fromer...

So you guys feel I should build more links with the site name and non-keyword based anchors? Anyone successfully turned this sort of penalty around?

I'm 99% sure its number 1 (too many backlinks with same text etc)... Anyone else experienced a penalty like this?

I would get more backlinks with varied anchor text and maybe contact some of the websites that have your link on them already and ask them to change your anchor text. most webmasters dont have a problem doing this

Generatinbg backlinks with LSI (related) keyword anchor text is a good way to de-optimize if your backlinks are over optimized for too few keywords. These links will still count for your theme so its a win win
