    If you are looking for ease with installing servers you can google Vertrigo Server and install that software and that will give you apache with php and mysql and lots of others. Also for dns I recommend downloading some dns software such as simple dns then when you have that dns software configured you will have to point your name servers at your IP. Normally 2 dedicated IP's work better for this but you may also just use 1 as it will also work fine.

    Hello,
    I would recommend using lighthttpd or Universal Server or LAMP or WAMP depending on OS. For DNS, you can make use of services from Free DNS routing like No-IP etc;

    You will need to contact your internet service provider. If you are opting for (A)DSL make sure you have more upload ratio than download ratio.

    This may sound stupid but can someone answer this:

    Is the amount of bandwidth you have determined by your ISP or Pc?

    Also and how do you check it?

    Also this is a great thread.

    @ankur0101

    When you change your pc in to a server make sure you have it in a very cool room, make sure it's properly ventilated and the the airflow is going around and under the pc, this will prevent it from over heating.

    Thanks,
    Gazzamc.

    ankur - If you're talking about India .. then you're well.. shit outta luck ... the 2mbit speeds are ONLY for download and not upload ..

    The upload is like 512kbps at max .. and very high latency at that .. I'd say drop the idea all togeather if it's anything serious you're planning to host.. you'll need a Dedicated IP if you want cPanel .. if you can live without that .. a dynamic IP with a dynamic DNS service ( eg . afraid.org) to go along will do just ok ..

    Still .. I stand at my point .. anything serious you want to host .. don't even think about it ..

    cheers..

    They use commercial technology, commercial links, and premium bandwidth.
    The plans you are talking about, are for home users and as such, not oriented towards 'web hosting' needs

    In theory, you could run a webserver on Dial Up if you wanted to. But then, it'd be nothing but a bottleneck
