How to create Internet Explorer add-on ?

Discussion in 'Products & Tools' started by Pidea, Aug 25, 2006.

    Hi !

I run a mis-spelled ebay auction site and want to create an add-on for Internet Explorer that would allow users to highlight any word on a page, right-click and choose to search for mis-spellings of that word via my site.

I've searched high and low on the web for a tutorial on creating IE add-ons but have drawn a blank. Does anyone know where I might find some information ?

I'm doing that too, but currently 78% of my visitors use IE so it makes sense to tap into those first.

but Firefox users are much more fond of extensions. Not to mention that it's easier to create plugins for Firefox than it is the case with IE because FF extensions are well documented.

If you want to take the IE route, I'd suggest getting a freelancer to do it.

From what I understand FF extensions use javascript and xml. For MSIE you will need Visual Studio 6 and some knowledge of VB/C++... Although there are some wizardy apps that help you create it... See:

I assume you mean something like "Google ToolBar" ? Well, you need to know C++ for that or any other advanced programming language. The process is called hooking or injecting. You need to write a .dll file and inject it into IE process.

I have lots of IE addons, a button that refreshes your window on a given time, an alphabetic toolbar to store your shortcuts, a flash saver plugin, another that clears caché, temporary files, history and cookies, a zoom in and zoom out, an FTP & HTML editor plugin, a "save this page as Outlook Express file", a Whois search button, plus a proxy switcher, RSS reader, thumbs gallery generator on visited pages and a spell checker.

When using Internet Explorer 6.1 and below with a very old (1999) shell called Web Surface I'm still using when needed, Internet Explorer turns into a browser skinned and tabbed with most of the functions that Firefox "rediscovered" many years later, including a real automatic feature that saves and reopens all of your tabs or predefined either after closing by your or closed after a crash or power failure ;)

I use both firefox and IE. He is kind of stuck in a box and cant switch to ff becuase his customers aren't going to. I haven't personally made a ie extension yet but have worked a bit with c++ and it is fairly easy if you know any other programming language first

I think an addon for firefox is better than for IE and you can find many ebooks that will help you to do.
