How to create an icon for browser tabs

Someone suggested to me a while ago that adding a simple icon for my sites to browser tabs could be a very simple marketing thing. And I agree... a good way to further branding efforts. But how do I go about it? I mean, I know how to create the image file. But where to I save it, upload it, add it, etc.?

What you're looking to do is create a "favicon."

Actually I have found http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ to be the best tool for creativng a favicon.
