blogger.com for a blog. Once you buy a domain you can still keep using the blogger software. Find something free and good for forum software, my recommendations are InvisionFree and SMF. Rich admin-control panel. Then get something like Wordpress or Joomla for your front page. All of these are free. You'll need a place to host it. Some places offer free hosting but you need to get ready to drop about 100 a year, maybe less.

Blogger and Wordpress have limited functionality as compared to Joomla. Joomla is an easy to use CMS to make a website. You can create a simple website or even a blog using it and then you can buy a domain name to make your own website available to internet users. The minimum amount you require to gain Webspace and Domain name would be around Rs. 900 ($20). If you want to make a BUSINESS site then it would be around Rs. 2700 ($60). I recently created a website for one of the Export Industry costing just $50. Check it out at www.vitaragexport.com

You can start wordpress.com. WordPress is an open-source CMS designed for blogging, but easily modified to enable the management of an entire website.

The first thing in starting a website is ask yourself two questions: 1) Do I have unique and original content to contribute to the web and 2) Do I know basic html coding? If you answered yes to both questions, then you are ready to build your first page. Build your site offline first. Using notepad to create your html pages.

Something that a lot of people don't think about . . . what is your purpose for creating a blog or website? Blogs are great for newsy topics or journaling. If you like to write and like to opine about things, it's perfect.

Or, if you just want to create a website to have a website, there are a couple of free website creators out there that are very simple to use and require very little learning curve. Yola.com or Weebly.com come to mind. You can be up and running in a matter of minutes, actually, and can play around and make things look as pretty as you like.

Now, if you want to create an online business, that's an entirely different matter. A lot of people are going beyond logging on these days. They want to earn extra income. The first thing you'll notice when you embark upon that activity is that there are countless guys waiting in the wings, trying to sell you the latest and greatest software. Everybody claims they have the key to riches and for a fee, will try to sell you their technique.

It is very possible to blow through a lot of money trying to make money online, even just using free blogging software and free hosting.

If you want to build a business, it is best to create a site with a 3-tier structure. This makes it easy to spider and easy for visitors to find your material. Nothing ever gets dated this way, unlike a blog, and if you build high quality content, you will eventually be able to turn from building, to actually just managing your business. With a blog, unless you're very good, the chances of gathering enough steam to do this is difficult because most blog followers are other bloggers, not customers.

I could go on, but the point is, take a look at what you're trying to accomplish and become informed. Just because everyone is blogging doesn't mean it's the best way to do it - and free isn't alway truly free.

Just some things to think about. ;)
