How to create a directory using a MAP

    Hello there,

I'm trying to create a directory that lists things by their geographic location in a clickable map. For instance, you see the United States, you click on Florida and it shows a list of links.

Are there any retail directories of this sort that you can purchase? Any free ones?

    Thanks!

If that is possible, then yes.

I'm trying to create a directory where you can find things based on their location--do you know of any program like that?

Thats a pretty good idea friend. Maybe you can take the image of a map (a big and precise image) and then, as people sign up their directories, little arrows on that map will show the directories location.

In addition, will it depend on where the directory is located in terms of hosting location or the creator/owners location?

Have you considered using something similar to the map that vBulletin forums use? Like, in the top of DP, you can click the "Fun Stuff" tab and click on user map.

Hope I helped in some manner. :)

I already made one directory using map for categories.

After days of research, I purchased map from http://www.fla-shop.com/
You can add categories links in xml file you get with swf file.

    It is easy to do.

Based on what I am understanding as far as your request goes, the best way for you to accomplish this would be to use flash as the front end of this and then link each map sector the the appropriate category.

It should be pretty straight forward and nothing brain busting about it.

If you need a map driven directory you can create it using map templates such as those from flashimap.com (http://www.flashimap.com), Adobe programming knowledge is required.

or you can consider Windows software - Imapbuilder (http://www.imapbuilder.com/), which can let you create a map using few mouse clicks.

you can easily make a linkable map and incorporate it into any site including a directory. I made one for my golf directory site Sp people can click on any state and then narrow the listings results down. The code is just a click able image that you just need to assign each link to, so if people click on Florida then make that state go to your Florida page etc etc

    hope this helps
