I am building a website for someone and would like to have it available online for them to look at and try out before updating their site.

I would like to build it on a subdomain of my website. How is this done?
    Example:
    My site: www.mysite.com
    Their site: abc.mysite.com

    Thanks

add a subdomain to your current domain. you should see that option in your web site control panel.

If you are using hostgator as your web hosting, you will see a heading called"subdomain" in your control panel. You just need to add the sudomain under the main domain and you are good to go.

Thanks guys. I am using 1and1 and have created the subdomain. when I enter the url in my browser, my regular site shows up. I am also using MODx with a database. So where do I upload the index and website files?

Well your web host must have sent you your ftp details, so just get a ftp software like filezilla and connect to your host and open www folder where you should upload the files :)

ok, thanks guys. I will give it a go tonight.
I was just expecting something different when I pointed to the new URL. I guess the browser gooes go the next available index.html file or something.

Hey guys, I got it working tonight.
I had not created a different account on my FileZilla setup. That is why it was still looking at my current site.
