Guys do you know how to copyright a theme digitally on the internet. I'm designer. I design unique themes for all scripts and in my last work, I couldnt get my money although I completed and gave the template. I have the source files of the theme. How can I get the copyright? Any help would be appriciated because the amount is not small, at least for me.($2000) Thanks.
Automatically copyrighted, if clients haven't paid you then you can file a DMCA complaint against the host which will usually result in them taking down the said site Also it's normally wise to have a contract with 50% pay upfront
Not so fast; this depends a lot on jurisdiction. Your recourse resides there. I'll back this up though: This splits the risk between both parties and is a standard in this industry.
It's a fair way to go and in ten years, we've never had an issue with it. Fankly, some folks have started projects and then just disappeared (who knows? hit by a Humer or something?) . . . so that protects against our losses. On the other hand, we always deliver, so we never been screwed on that side nor left the client short. I might add some caviats here, though: As we work with a lot of applications that need to be licenced, we get the licensing up front; the "half down"/"half done" is only for development we we charge. Guard against slippage on spec./scope: don't ever let anyone push stuff into scope when that was not part of the original estimate. This can happen very easily and frankly a lot of folks will try to get more than spec., so it's crucial to guard against this. Typically, just pick this up on the "half done" invoice. With a large client base such as we have, you will find some that have a poor pahment history. Charge upfront for these bad cards.
