I agree that Riva FLV encoder is a great free alternative to Adobes.

i think all converters will make avi files in the same size. It depends not on the converter but on the file format.
I'm using MacVide VideoFlash converter, if you're intrested in) Can't give you a link, beceuse of policy error) Google!

Do not know which format u exactly want to convert the vob to. So I can just recommend the rersoft vob converter. It could convert vob to all the popular formats.

The output file's size and quality depend on what format and its properties that u choose. If u use the rer converter, u could try the default settings for the output format u chose. Or u could adjust them by hitting the Edit button. If u want to set them by yrself, I recommend u to set the video compression as H.264/AVC. And video bite rate usually is a critical property for the file's size. U also could choose the bite rate in the drop-down menu.
By the way, if u wanna transport it on the internet, FLV is ur best choice. Although it doesn't support H.264/AVC. U can use the default video compression - flv.

Domino Video Converter Pro can change VOB into almost all video formats including AVI, MPEG, WMV, FLV,MTS, MP4, MKV, HD Videos, 3GP, DivX, XviD, MOV, ASF, MOD, H264. Just click one button, the conversion can be finished in a short time. The output video is very clear to watch.

Handbrake is what I use and it's free
So simple and it even creates queues if you have multiple videos to convert.
