I always use nidesoft video converter. But I don't convert .asf! You may try it ! hope it can help you!
Take a look at AVS4You - there is a free trial version, but its commercial software. It converts all types of videos from one format to another. It can even take that asf file and convert it to swf or flv for flashplayers. I tried a lot of those free converters, and most of them did the job ok. But if you want to convert a lot of those files, then take a serious look at avs4you.
