Use a router first of all. Setup a small home network on the desktop pc install the laptop into that network too. After that make sure your firewall allows both pc and laptop to connect to each other then just use the network feature to connect.

No need to get a router if you want to connect two computers.

1)- you would need LAN cards on both (Every one knows that)
2)- Do not use straight cable, for Lan networking Parallel cable is used.
3)- just plug in the cable to both of computers
4)- go to my network places>>create small home or office connection
5)- press next, next and it will ask if "Computer is directly connected to internet or uses another computer" choice is yours
6)- Next it will ask for computer description , you could leave it blank
7)- Computer name is next. YOu could write any name
8)- Workgroup name: this must be same on both computers (I guess it should be WORKGROUP)
9)- Tun on/off file and printer sharing
10)- Do this on both computers, it might ask for a reboot

    Hope this helps
