How to collect demographic data from a site?

Someone asked me today what type of visitors visit my site. I don't know why but it had never occured to me to find out what kind of people visit my site. I can make an educated guess, but I could be way off.

Just to be clear I'm talking demographics, i.e. ages, male/female, incomes, etc., not countries or links they've clicked from.

Have any of you tried to gather this kind of data? How do you go about it? Would it even be worth finding out on a site that (according to Google Analytics) only gets around 11% repeat visitors (although I get over 10,000 uniques per month).

I've done it, however you can't collect it by just using a program, you'll need to create a place to request that your users take a survey to give you that information. Make it clear that the information is completely private and is only to gather general demographic information to help attract potential advertisers (which is what we were doing, we were updating our media kit) and that they'll be helping your site by doing it. That obviously requires that you have an excellent relationship with your users
