How to code links in footer of a theme

I want links in footer of my theme that I will offer free of charge to remain there. I am currently using include for a file in subfolder of template folder. So it can't be edited directly with wp editor.

How can I protect that file even more? I saw some people use java scrambler or something

    thanks!

    hi jason,

as long as you don't let the public write to your themes directory, they shouldn't be able to edit the footer template unless they are logged into your blog.

I created a template and i want to distribute it freely. I don't want webmasters using it removing my link

oh right. Well there is no full proof way to do this. If someone wants to remove your credit link they will.

However, you can make it more difficult for them to do this by encrypting the footer code link and making it so that the template won't work unless the credit link is there.

I've personally never done this though. I always just tell users that they can remove it if they want but that I appreciate the link back. The thing is, you can use a lot of energy chasing people to put your credit link back up and in that respect, it can be counter productive.

Put some kind of code in the header of the main index template. Make is some kind of number that is special and put it where google can index it.

A couple of times a month do a google search for the code and see who is using your template. Then make sure they did not remove the link.

Most honest bloggers leave the links in place - I know I do.

    A good idea.

It will help you see who has removed your link however if you do find someone using the template without linking back, you will have to try and stop them by contacting their host or sending them a cease and desist. Sometimes, it just isn't the hassle, particularly when the person doing it is an a'hole who won't play ball.
