To select profitable keywords for your site. You need just a simple guide to help you out.
Getting a keyword is about searching for profitable niche markets that are less competitors.
Using the combination of wordtracker.com and Google keyword reaserch is best tool to use.
You simply go to one of the two sites and type your loved niche market e.g chocolate.
And then see how the market is profitable and the competitors there.
You're simply searching for keywords that will generate you a lot of income.
Then go over to the search and type that market you've discovered and take a look at the results by the right.Check the sites and see how they are and also get more info about then like e.g their pagerank, traffic ranks and lot more. This will give you and insight of how the market you're about taking part is.

Does wordtracker works also good for non-English sites?

I'm okay with adwords and traffic estimator

You can start in 2 ways:
    1. Have general topic in mind and search for keywords in adwords tool
    OR
    2. Have a product in mind, find selling sites that have affiliate programs and input URL of website in adwords tool.

You can then input the keywords on Traffic estimator. You can search them on Google. I can't post live links yet.

I've always liked the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool - does it still exist? Last time I was trying it, it was extremely slow.

    1) Prepare a list of keywords used in the site ( for existing website )
    2) filter it by relevance

    3) use keywordtracker/trillian/google to find variations

    4) use the one with more search volume

this might be enough for a good start

Type in the main keyword of your site into the Google Keyword Tool and it will return a list of related keywords. Check the competition of the keywords by typing into Google. If it's over 500K don't use it. Find lower, less competitive keywords to target for your sites so that you have a chance of ranking high. Also, think of related terms to your main term. Think as a consumer...think as a person wanting information from your site. What term would they use?
