How to choose a name?

I am so awful at this. Is there a program where you can plug words in and it helps you make a domain name?

Seems more of an art that can't really be automated (but I guess the spammer who registered a few dozen domain names may have used software).

Surprisingly when I couldn't get the domain name I wanted I had a few good domain names suggested at:

    http://www.domaintools.com/

Be interesting to see what tools may be suggested.

    Good luck,
    Richard

I hate those automatic domain name suggestion tools, such as http://www.domaintools.com . Basically it gives you variations based on what you already typed in.

There are various strategies to choosing a name. The keyword-based name is good for SEO, but unbrandable and sounds very prosaic.

Then there's the made-up word, used as a brand. You could try one of those word-generators for inspiration. The drawback is, it's rubbish for SEO and you risk sounding very silly.

Another approach is taking two words, maybe one of which is a keyword and one unrelated, and making a domain out of them. This can be effective because it's quirky and brandable, but not necessarily entirely useless for SEO. Think LockerGnome, WebMonkey, and so on. The other advantage is, you're using real words which can be easily remembered and spelled. If your words are short enough, you stand a real chance of getting a great domain name that no-one has thought to register before.

I've had some decent sales off of domaintools.com suggestions ( One for $1,200 and one for $600 just in the past 2 weeks ) so I tend to like them. Sure, most sound silly and completely unusable. BUT, there are some gems among the rough (Maybe "diamonds" would be going too far ;) )
Had a $500 offer for "forasmile.com" that domaintools suggested when I was looking for "soul patrol" ripoffs ( grinpatrol, etc. )

I use the smart search of danthradomains.com, I think godaddy should have it too.

Just put your keywords and it comes up with some variations. I just was playing around with car sale, and found AUTODEALMALL.COM and RIDEBIZ.COM (this is probably a lil gem) among the garbage.

    They are probably available.

As a total amateur, I tend to use things like crossword solvers and hence have had some real gimmicky names (whos.at). I have only about 20-25 names.

Recently I decided to try 'I Spy' like the old kids game whilst travelling and have regged

    ispyshopping.com
    ispybetting.com
    ispychat.com
    ispydn.com

probably go down like a lead balloon but you never know:D
