Yes you can use the query in Google but it usually only shows a small percentage of your backlinks, for example 10%.

You need to register with Google WebMaster tools - Google doesn't show backlinks publicly.
Yahoo site explorer shows yahoo backlinks, and it's a reasonable assumption that google is counting similar.

If you use alltheweb.com or altavista.com you can get very similar results as the ones that google might show.

Not that I'm aware of. As far as I know, Google Webmaster Tools is the only resources for monitoring Google recognized backlinks.

Use webmaster tools. The link: keyword seems not so accurately.

    Try: link:domain.com ;)

Otherwise, I'd use websites like http://www.domain-pop.com/backlink-check.php, they'll show more backlinks. Remember that Google doesn't show backlinks directly, it takes some time before they show up ;)

Add your site to the Google Webmaster Tools. Although it's not very detailed compared to other back link checkers.

There are a number of tools out there which can monitor the backlinks for your website. Google's webmaster tools is just one of these ways. Thanks for the info on the other methods.
