Hey guys, I tried doing a search on the forum here, and if i missed the topic, i'm sorry for a dup post How does one find out the PR ranking for other sites? Thanks!
Where can I get hold of the article that Google admitted PR are useless? Apparently, PR are used to rank the importance of the page.
PR is still relevant, but not as much as it used to be. Other factors now hold far more significance - remember, at the end of the day, it's all about relevance, not just popularity. PR does remain a handy indicator of how frequently a site is likely to be crawled though Cheers, JL
For a synopsis of the controversy take a look at http://www.axandra.com/news/newsletter137.htm#facts - Michael
"It's very likely that the PageRank number that can be seen in the Google Toolbar is mainly a marketing instrument for Google that doesn't have much effect on the search results. Google seems to use an internal PageRank value for its ranking algorithm and a public PageRank value for the toolbar. That would explain why many web pages with a high ranking on Google have a low (toolbar) PageRank." From: http://www.axandra.com/news/newsletter137.htm#facts It is apparent that Google is no longer using PR...and that's why they removed the "PR" feature in their toolbar tour. Look for the PR indicator to be gone very soon on future Toolbar updates.
This reminds me of a client who knew better from day one. he wanted PR to be the indicating factor whether our contract was honored or not. Since I don't get involved in sales, I told my partner go ahead since it seemed to be too easy to be true (4k to get him a PR4 ). Anyways after 3 days Google updated and he had his PR. He then asked me the unforgettable question: "SO how does that help me?" I still got him ranked and then he calls me that he disappeared from Google. I looked at the site and saw meta tags cluttered with robot instructions (imo don't try to tell the bots what to do), every image had an alt tag of 20-25 keywords seperated by commas, the images were all named kw1-kw2-kw3-kw4-kw5-kw6.jpg he heard somewhere it would help. Total over optimization. Now he wants to meet ... maybe he learned something but I won't count on it Anyways, what I am trying to say, if you are a newbie, don't put all your emphasis on something you just learned without understanding the bigger picture. Instead of looking at PR, keep checking your rankings and gradually improve them. Don't try to figgure Google out, work with them.
It's not that I dont' understand your point, I'm not planning on putting all my eggs in one basket. This isn't even a career based thing for me - more of a hobby. I had been hearing about PR, wanted to know how to find out what sites were ranked - simple curiousity Even as a 'newbie' I am aware that if things were as easy as ONE factor, everyone would be doing it. Quite frankly, as a web user, i dislike google. I have never been able to find results even close to what I was looking for. I have used yahoo just about forever and find it much more useful. Which I suppose is one reason why I want to learn more about google. I do run adsense, and find the whole process of search engine ranking to be interesting. anyway, just my 2 cents i suppose wendy
Wendy, I understand. I like Google because they're trying. But yeh, we are far from perfection but things are getting better with the search results I believe. More and more abusers get penalized. If you think quality and improving results for web searches, you're on the right track and your sites will get up there and climb when others fall Mike
If you are using FireFox, get hold of an extension called "Google PageRank Status". The PR will appear the the bottom right hand corner of the browser.
