how to check links

Hi, please forgive me if this has already been posted somewhere, but I'm a complete newbie to this and have been posting comments on relevant blogs with either my url in the signature or in the name field. How can I track all of those links from those comments? In other words, I want to be able to measure how many links I've posted so far and various sites and blog comments. If this has already been answered somewhere on the forum, please direct me to that thread. Have looked over many threads, but did not find what I was looking for. Thank you in advance.

You can either use Yahoo Site Explorer or this backlinks checker tool: http://www.backlinkwatch.com
Otherwise you can check in Google Webmaster Tools if you have it running on your site.

What is the delay between posting a backlink and it being found by Google?

Hrm. Backlinkwatch turns up 2 inbound links (from a small unrelated region-specific forum and an obscure page on one of my own PR 0 sites) for the site I've been submitting to every directory I can find, and hit 1000+ on my usual site, so I wouldn't trust it.

The one with 2 links has PR3, the one with 1000s has PR4.

Yahoo Site Explorer is your best bet for checking back links.

Is Yahoo Site Explorer a software program ? Please forgive me, I know this is probably a very simple and basic question, but I'm a complete newbie. Thank you all for taking the time to post and appreciate your patience.

One of my favs is http://www.linkdiagnosis.com/ Make sure you check the filters! I usually want to do one page, the default is main site which pulls multiple pages. Not only do you see where your competition is getting their links from, but also which ones are the most potent.
