How to check keyword competition?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by enikram, Jun 14, 2015.

Certainly some searches may end up 20,000,000 results, but if none of those are optimzed, then you can be on #1 with just on-page optimization.

Then you can have a search that returns 10 websites, but if all of those are using the best SEOs and pay a lot of money for it then there's a good chance it may be next to impossible to beat any of them unless you spend top $$$.

So, how would one determine competition of a keyword?

Competition checking is simple..if your keyword is generic and targets whole world..competition is very high
If the keyword has continent attached to it competition is high, if it has country attached to it then bit less competition , if it has state attached to it then its low competition and if its small region then very low competition.

Apart from this generic criteria you can there by categorize globally targeted keywords into long tail and generic or primary keywords.
if you go by keyword planner it will always show primary keyword as easy hence u need to scan them through some paid tools.
For long tail keywords keyword planner gives perfect analysis.
    I hope this helps
    Regards

i agree with garry420. The local keywords with the city or state can be ranked easily than the generic keywords. For example "web development chicago" can be ranked easily than the keyword "web development". You can also use the keyword planner tool for this purpose. For each keyword, you have to check the keyword volume. Bigger the volume of the keyword, it is tough to rank a website for that keyword.

This is universal, short keywords often have high competition compared to long tail. Optimizing locally will be easier and more profitable, in my opinion.

Aside from Google keyword planner you can use other platforms like Reddit, Delicious, and some reputable websites that has an active online community which discusses your related field. This will be considered as your basis in targeting your audience effectively.

For PPC campaign purposes Google Keyword Planner can be your first choice, SEMrush can be a good alternative too.
For organic keyword ranking there are certain factors you need to consider when doing a keyword research.
First and foremost is how valuable it is for your target audience, they should always be the first to consider when doing a keyword research.
How will they be satisfied on the keyword they used.
Second is how rankable a keyword is; considering if it is a broad term or a longtail term.
Lastly would be your (site) competitors.

    Google's Keyword Planner.

I'm surprised as to why you're asking this question in the first place. The planner allows you to see local searches as well, along with the number of times a keyword is searched, and if it's heavily contested.

You should also learn what your target audience is likely to search for, like if they're looking for car repair shops in Muncie, Indiana. They'll likely type in "car repair muncie" or "muncie car repair". It's quite simple, really.

That's not true! If "web development chicago" have seos working of all sites, you will have a VERY VERY hard time ranking that keyword. This is what competition is all about. In fact, web development can even be easier to rank if none of those seo are after it!
