Hello Guys, I just a got a new Airtel Modem. Its been told that I will get 1mbps download speed. But while downloading files it shows only 200kbps. Why this is so? Can anybody suggest me a good tool to find the exact broadband speed? Thanks
modems have a config file, just like a script does.it says the max download and upload speed. your isp uploads and overrides the config file. it comes down to your advertised speed.doesn't matter what speed a modem can go,it limits the speed to whatever the is in the config file that isp uploads. couple notes: don't confuse bits and Bytes.(200kb is 1600kB) speed tests are a waste of time.it will give you wild results.the only true test is downloading files. ;-)
Thanks man.. I have checked with speedtest.net its showing exactly .5 Mbps. And I think I am getting the correct download speed if I was wrong with bits and bytes
Its the swift plan... 1099 Residential.. And yeah 10.3% charge extra for Some stupid things..So around 1300 INR per month.
On a 48kbps connection and this is what i get with everything turned off. your network must be really cool to offer you 6-7 KBps during day time.
The 1mbps download speed you've mentioned is only an advertising speed. A lot of thing will affect the speed that you'll get and one of them is your distance from the telephone exchange. So, the closer you are to the telephone exchange, the faster your broadband connection can be. I usually use this tool to test the speed of my broadband connection : http://www.speedtest.net/ - Dynashox -
yeah I've checked the speed already and its showing same... Are you sure that the speed determines the distance from telephone exchange. I don't think so. Here we have 'Junction Boxes' for Every 100 families.. So I think they maintain good speed. I'm not sure though.
Well, that distance thing is only for wireless products. But the broadband we use is connected to wire. So not any problem regarding distance.
Yes exactly.. Even for resolving the wireless problems service providers have placed hubs in area wise I think...
The distance from the telephone exchange does affect no matter what you think about it. People who live in big cities are more likely to be able to get a faster broadband speed due to a greater number of telephone exchanges in their area. But this will affect if you're using ADSL broadband and not Cable broadband. For my area, I only managed to get 60% of the speed that I should get. As I mentioned before, the distance from the telephone exchange is only one reason. There are still other couple of reasons why you don't get the same speed as advertised. - Dynashox -
I had observed in the past that the length of the cable from the hub also affects your speed. If it is really long, the speed does get hampered. Try to persuade the service guys and get the hub/junction box as close as possible! Regards, RightMan
Yeah that's true. But hopefuly in Bangalore we all have good broadband connections. I don't know whether anybody still using dial ups or ADSL connectivitiy.. Here all the lines are high speed optical fibre cables..
While using these speed test websites, which server we have to select ? Nearest one or distant one ? Are these sites tell the accurate speed ?
