How to change Domains

I run a small forum and I am thinking about switching domain names.

What I would like to know is what is the best way to go about it. I have been building back links and exposure to my current domain and don't really want to loose that if I can avoid it.

    What should I do?

If there is no page rank for your current domain then by redirecting all the traffic from this domain to the 1 you need you don't lose anything

You can avoid it by do 301 redirect from an old domain to a new one. All links value that you have built from the old domain would be transfered to a new one.

Please be noted - This kind of transfer is the safest way but not fast. It would take times before the value transfer will be completed. So meanwhile, your ranking for a new domain will be fluctuatued until the transfer completed. The time frame is vary depends on specific site. It could take range from 3 weeks to 6 months based on my own experienced. Be prepared for this too.
