How to change domain without losing traffic?

I am planning to change my domain with different domain name but I don't want to loss traffic from the old domain. I can setup a URL redirect and change the old domain in new domain within Webmaster tools of Google. But I am wondering if Google will redirect all search result to the new domain.

Another problem is how other search engine like Yahoo and Bing will handle this.

Have you done this before? Please share you experience.

    Hello,

Yes i was doing thinks like that. You can redirect domain but ranking of redirected domain stay...new domain can't get same rank.Only good thing is your traffic will go on your new doman. When someone click or type in browser redirected domain automatically people goes on you new domain.

why do you want to move to a new domain on the first place?? just keep it and register a new one... domain are very cheap nowadays. then you can do transformation step by step.. i mean just make your new site popular and let old site die naturally. that's the best way...

Don't change it, leave it like it is, because you will have to start all over again

You can redirect your URL from old domain to new domain URL by adding redirecting code in your source code. I have done it without loosing my page rank as well :)

Use a permanent 301 redirection from your old website to your new website. Domain transfers can be quite a pain in the ass since you've got to do lots of work.

Your regular visitors would also know that you've moved to new a location if you've done the redirection properly. Same goes for the rest that would try to visit your website through your old URL.

Apart from setting up in Google Webmaster Tools, you can set up 301 redirect via .htaccess to make sure about changing on domain. 301 redirect could help you in two ways

    - Help keeping your indexed pages from old website to be found in a new one
    - Help transfer all links weight that pointing to the old domain to a new one

Just Redirect it using HTML or a 301 Redirect. It will basically forward traffic to your new site. The downside is that you will still need to own the other site as well.

If most of your traffic come from search engine, i suggest to not change the domain. but if your traffic come from another source you can do url forwarding.

you will lose 20%-80% of your traffic, no matter how hard you try. Change domain is a painful process

301 redirect will surely helps you to get your visitors and traffic with your new domain. You just have to put new domain instead of your old domain with 301 redirect
