Changing the domain basically involves revamping your site. You can change your domain anytime you want and revamp it totally. This would usually affect the seo or traffic to your site. However, there are other ways that you can prevent the maximum seo damage during the transition. One of the techniques to change the site without affecting the traffic or seo is via a 301 redirect. This means that before you proceed to the actual transition of domain name, you need to divert all the traffic from Google through 301 redirect in order to inform Google or other search engines about the permanent transition. All you have to do is just give it some time and wait until all the referrals are on the 301 board before you implement the domain change. Hope this helps...

I think you can also advise google using webmaster tools that the domain name has been changed.

You should also 301 redirect all of your pages, not just your main domain, IF you have incoming links to inner pages.

For example, if you've got 10 links to www.abc.com/thispage.html then you'll need to create a 301 redirect from that page to www.newdomainname.com/thispage.html

That way you won't lose any PR juice.
