How to change article to avoid penalty for duplicate content?

What is the best way to change an article, if you submit it to a number of online directories?
What i am using now - submit it to top 10 and than add 30% of content, submit to 50-70 next and than add 30% of content more... Any suggestions?

You are misunderstanding the duplicate content penalty.

It only applies if the article is on your website as well as lots of others. The best thing is to make 2 totally different versions - one for your site and one to send to article sites.

Well, I just use Article Content Spinner. It does take sometime to do the settings for the first time. But after that the software basically works automatically.

Could you please suggest any other software utility similar to Article Content Spinner.

    Thanks,

Mostly incorrect. Your both misunderstanding it. It is not a penalization but a filter. And it goes for duplicate content on site and duplicate content on your site and others. But you are right on one thing. Just write two articles. If you don't it is useless material and you might as well not post it.

I like your idea about making 2 versions. Thanks.

What I have done in the past is wait for a few months after publishing on my site, then submitted to article sites. I always assumed, since the one on my site is published first & older, I wouldn't get duplicate content penalty!

Not exactly true. The more authority site will a lot of times be considered original however if the content is indexed before the others get submitted it is likely to be considered the original.

You might have a point about the site with more authority. However, if the article is published on my site 6 months before any other site, wouldn't my site be considered the one with the original article!

You would think and it would probably be the case but it is not always. One factoring in this I believe is how much duplicate content each site has. If your site is fairly settled and has no duplication of content and print the article first and another site which has 90% duplicate content publishes it you are likely to be seen as the original. However I think publishing your articles multiple times elsewhere can hurt you in the long run. I personally don't believe there is a need to. If the article is only good for article directories submit it to them but if it is a useful article to your visitors then don't let anyone else have it. Keep it for yourself and gather all those links to your site. Get my drift?

Try using synonymizers - great stuff. However, you need to check the article after performing each synonymization to track and correct some obvious stylistic mistakes.

It is worthless garbage. The article directories won't accept nonesense made with that program and it you wouldn't want it on your site. Content is useless unless it is helpful to your visitors.

Read my post again. First of all I don't mean "synonymizer" exactly - I mean software that changes some words to synonyms. I use my own software with dictionaries that I make for each group of articles depending on subject. And I read them after changing with that software. Articles GET ACCEPTED and the DO DRIVE TRAFFIC to my sites.

V is on the $$ as usual...

Just write 2 articles and be done with it. One for the site and one for distribution...

I have tried the 'get it indexed - then distribute' and it don't work - if it is picked up by a greater authority site than yours... U lose

Yeah, great idea, I was going to say something like that too. I've noticed some cases, when more authoritative site duplicated page of less authoritative one and won competition in SERPs. Moreover, this second site got penalized for duplication.

Well let me put it another way. It is useless. Computers can't make sentences perfectly yet. The program changes words to words that mean totally different things. For example:

If your okay with your company being associated with articles that appear to have been written by a 2 year old don't let me stop you. And yes article directories will accept them but not the good ones. The good ones that pass the most value won't. And I read articles on some of these directories and when I see one like that I report them and they sometimes remove them. These directories aren't just for backlinks but are resources for learning.

As Gypsy said just write 2 articles. If you haven't got enough experience, time and/or money to do that I suggest you find a different job. And please don't take that the wrong way but it is true. I have seen guys do this before and it always fails. Google isn't stupid.

EDIT: That quote I made came from SeoRefugee: http://www.seorefugee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4034

Ha ha ha ha.. hard M8 - I couldn't possibly write well on all of the topics that our client base covers - so I have a team of writers to create our articles for distribution.. so if U can't write or don't have time - Hire some one. A quality article costs me around $25/1000 words - but the syndication from a well writen piece is worth it.. more syndication = more click through traffic and back links

Same here. Although for seo I mostly write my own. I don't think my subscirbers would take kindly to someone else's articles and I am not sure I could trust seo articles to another company. However I agree that buying content is also a solution. For my other sites I do that if I need content.
