I just got my first check from amazon.co.uk for about £50. I live in the united states, and when I took it to my bank they wanted a $50 fee for handling the international exchange. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cash my check or how to proceed with amazon. Thanks, Mark
I have to do a similar thing when cashing in USD cheques (i am from uk). They call it a negotiation fee, and its normally about $20, but isn't always the same. As far as i am aware, its the US banks that put most of this charge on the UK banks (but i am no 100% sure on that). You may be able to open a GBP account, cash it in there, and then transfer it to your normal USD account, but this may not save any/much money, either...
You may be able to open a British bank account in the USA through travel agencies such as Thos. Cook they do that sort of thing and takes about three weeks.
I accept that there is a charge for currency conversion but a $50 fee for a £50 cheque is plain ridiculous you have lost half of the revenue straight away. Raise your payment threshold with amazon. And try a different bank as charges may vary.
