I use the calculator that came with windows. Just be sure to switch it to scientific mode for the most accurate results.

It is actually quite difficult to judge keyword competition and I am doing an experiment at the minute. It is easy to tell if something is going to be easy or really hard by looking at the results however in-between can be quite hard. For example if you type in a search term and get very few results i.e less than 100 000 and the top ten pages look completely random i.e. no authority sites such as wikipedia then you would suspect low competition. If you typed in a key phrase that returned millions of results which contained top authority sites like Wikipedia and exact match domains then you likely have a tough competition. However one thing you must not do for sure is base competition on number of results a lone on broad search.

What I am currently doing now is typing in search terms with the allintitle:"keyword" and allinanchor:"keyword". This will give me a better idea of how many pages are at least trying to rank for the key phrase. The lower the better and I am currently going for less than 100 but I want to rank straight away 1000 is still lowish. If the result comes up low and you don't have any big websites on the first page then you likely have low competition. If it comes up the opposite then it is high.

I don't know of any free tools but the good paid tools are Long Tail Pro and Market Samaurai. I know Long Tail Pro has a free 10-day trial if you want to try it out.

Competition will be different depending on which searchengine you're trying to optimize your site for.

Take google for instance since most people will optimize for Google's searchengine. First make sure you're not logged into your Google account or the results may be skewed to your preferences.

Then type in your keyword in quotes (eg. "keyword phrase") so you only get results for that keyword.

Analyze that 1st page in the SERP's (number of competing sites doesn't matter), you're only interested on the competition of that page - each subsequent page (2nd, 3rd, etc.) reduces the search count by 90%. So unless there's HUGE search numbers only the 1st page matters.

I use MarketSamurai to analyze the listings (there's a free trial I think), or you can download the free version of TrafficTravis. There's a number of factors you want to check for, but one of the main ones is number and PR of the backlinks. MarketSamurai has some great tutorials on analyzing the competition.

you can use "Google's keyword tool". it can show you the competition on keyword or key phrase. You can customize your search of keyword according to country, category etc. This is a very useful tool, you must try it.

    Good luck

Traffic Travis is great, thanks for advising it -- it's very helpful in terms of keywords competitiveness discovering, it also analyses link profile for top 10 sites in SERP for each of keywords.
