How to calculate direct traffic????

I am working on a web stats tracking script for my site at the moment but I seem to be having a problem collecting direct traffic stats.

I have been comparing the stats my script collects with those of other agents, such as Google Analytics and my Direct traffic is at about 45% whereas on GA it is around 11%.

I must have something wrong with how I am assessing the traffic.

How would you classify a direct traffic hit?

How are you currently identifying it? Perhaps that's a better start point for people to give opinion on...

check referrer -> should be nothing
    count out all bots
count only actual pages/htmls , dont count hits for css/images/javascript files or whatever...
you will be about right that way....

Why don't you try to use CPV? it's cost less than PPC specially adwords in most cases.

Google Anaytics does not give you site to site comaprison, if that is what you are looking for. i.e., between 2 URL's you may have or between you & a competitor.

    Use www.compete.com

I personally like the wide range of statistics it provides & the best thing is you dont have to save images. Your stats are stored on a URL.

    www.hostcat.com

There are ready-made trackers. You can sign up with them and they give you a javascript code (generally) to place on all pages you want tracked.
