How to buy a new Design?

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a new .PSD design for my apparel shop.

How do I go about buying a new design if I don't have a web designer?

I was told to come here to find a new design, but whats the best option I have?

Some questions I have in mind:
    1. How do I make sure the design is 100% unique and not some template taken off a 'buy template' site?

    2. If I hire a designer to make me a .PSD, what if I don't like his design? Do I have to pay him for his time for trying? Pr will he try out other designs until I'm satisfied?

    3. Are contests here on DP for a design the best way to go? That way I can view any designs I like and if I don't like any, what happens? Do I have to pay each of the contest participants?

    Thank you.

    Well Hello,
We can design templates for you in .PSD files and even code them if you like.

Please check out our portfolio at:

    www.shawnsitsolutions.com

Our policy is like this, we design it for you, if you don't like the first one we will redo a 2nd one free of charge, if you don't like the 2nd one we will do any many more after that for only 50% off.

If you don't like any of them don't buy them it is simple as that.

You can add me to msn:

If you would like to talk further.

I do designs myself, and usually give you a quote based on specifications before i start the project. Now, instead of trying to promote myself to you though, i would recommend to you to go to the contest forum and take a look at how others are doing it. You can get a good idea of what goes on there. It might suit your needs, but some people prefer working with a webdesigner that doesn't need to compete (since most of the better ones won't as they can design alot better than the newbies who try to go at it in the contests section [that's not to say that everyone who tries in the contest section is a newbie, or vice-versa but that does follow along alot]).

Since you're going for the first time around, go with a contest (and no you DONT have to pay every single member, but you WILL have to pick one that you like and pay that one, and most likely share in that thread who you picked as no one likes wasting time).

Hope that has helped you. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

well I would recomend you to create a thread in the BsT section and look for a designer but you can also check out the various freelance sites like elance odesk etc.

pm me if you have any questions and just to let you know I'm a designer myself ^^

Several places to look for designers:
    - Freelance bidding sites (scriptlance.com , getafreelancer.com , elance.com)
    - go to 99designs.com, look at the winning designs there and contact the winners for their portfolio.
    - Go to the services section inside B&T in this forum, post a topic there asking for portfolios of designers who want to apply.
    - Go to talkfreelance.com , there's also a section for recruiting designers.

OK, here's my answers to your questions:

    1. How do I make sure the design is 100% unique and not some template taken off a 'buy template' site?

Choose your designer wisely. Look at his portfolio. Read the reviews of his works (on forums, on freelance sites etc.)

    2. If I hire a designer to make me a .PSD, what if I don't like his design? Do I have to pay him for his time for trying? Pr will he try out other designs until I'm satisfied?

Make sure before you pay someone, he has to agree to the working terms. You have to write (at least a brief) working terms including:
    - Deadlines
    - Payment
    - Other rules that both parties have to follow. For example: you retain the right to ask for modification if you are not satisfied with the design without being charged any extra fees.

Make sure that the designer agrees to that term, then you can do anything you want with him/her.

    3. Are contests here on DP for a design the best way to go? That way I can view any designs I like and if I don't like any, what happens? Do I have to pay each of the contest participants?

Contests are not really the way to go. You can easily get scammed, and the designs are not guaranteed to be unique. Also, some freelancers hate the terms "design contest". Want to know why? Go to google.com and search for "spec work".

But contest is good for you if you don't have a big budget. You only need to pay the winner.

If you have a bigger budget (more than about 150$), I guess you'd better hire a designer and work with him personally.

That's my answers, but I guess many other people have different advices that you can take :)

    Thanks for all the input.

So I probably won't go the contest route. Already got lots of replies from several designers and will take your advice with consulting and establishing the terms.

Hold a contest at 99designs.com. I am sure that designers would be there to develop the best design for your money.
