    there are many ways to get backlinks. some common methods are below:

    article submission
    directory submission
    forum posting with signatures (doesn't woth much but still a common practice)
    blog commenting
    Press Releases
    social bookmarking
    social media/web 2.0 pages like squidoo lens, hubpages
    guest blogging, etc

    I think these ones cover it all. Just a nice pace of just writing and talking will help build yours up. Gosh, my signature alone here has worked pretty good and truthfully it's very rewarding.     An easy, although fairly expensive, method is to use services such as Linkvana. The efficacy of such links can be debatable, but it's fairly automated. Unfortunately most sites don't have the budget to use such services. But it's an option for you.

    Skip the recommendations for link exchanges, directories, and angel's/pauls links.

    What you need to do is find places where there is alot of discussion about whatever your content is about. Places like blogs, forums, social media groups.

    Then, join in the conversation. Become an authority on the topic. make your username well known to anyone to people that are interested in your topic.

    Then you can occasionally drop your link in where it is relevant to the conversation, through posts, comments, tweets, diggs, whatever.
