While I plan to market a new project broadly, I also wanted to give it the appropriate amount of attention to optimize it for a local market. I want to generally build banklinks, but more specifically I want to have those backlinks improve my local rankings and help geo-targeted SEO.

Besides local forums about the area, facebook pages for places nearby, and Craigslist can anyone think of other good places to try and build links? I live in Los Angeles, I feel like there must me more places online to post links about the area.

If this is for a local business, look for opportunities to get on the websites of the local Chamber of Commerce, business co-ops (usually a lot of these in large cities with fairly low fees), local non-profits (small charitable donation), just anything the business could form a relationship with that you have a shot getting on the website of. These won't only help to localize your SEO, it also brings in relevant local traffic and helps establish some trust and reputation.

I usually add my general keyword with a state when I am targeting an area.

Example: medical transcription training + texas (state) or dallas = texas medical transcription training or dallas medical transcription training.

I also make simple keyword research first to know if there are more possible keywords that are area specific so that I can use it in targeting a local area for my keywords.
