The technique that works for me is mass submission to article directories.

If you have time on your hands, do article marketing. It's free as long as you are willing to work.

Create an account with 10 or more article directories (here's a list of article directories).
Then write and submit 1 to 5 articles everyday.

At first traffic will be a bit slow when your site is new. Even then, you will receive traffic from your articles. Once the SE gets to your content, you will experience a sudden burst in traffic.

First of all I wouldn't recommend paid links.. You need to write in more forums for a start. I often post in 5. Also try article writing... Squidoo, hubpages, zimbio are all good ones...

You need to be a very sweet and smart talker. I interact with many webmasters and site owners who have PR6-7-8 on daily basis through mails. After around 10 to 15 mails exchanged, I get a backlink for my site, absolutely free of cost. This is how I got my new blog and site a PR of 3 and 5 respectively. However it is a very tiresome job as you have to write lot of mails.

But its worth it if you are getting it for free

1. Do follow blogging and forum posting - Find blogs in a similar niche to your own that are do follow, also post signature links here at DP, Warrior Forums and Site Point, which are the best
2. Post articles in article directories ezinearticles & go articles are best

 

I have found that these ten things are really all you need. The only way to get better links or to get them faster would be to pay for them.
