How to Build a WordPress Membership Site for Free?

I know that WordPress can be converted to CMS thus allowing it to be a membership site. I have seen many plugins that offer the conversion of wordpress into a membership site, but none of them are free.

Any ideas on how to build a membership site using the wordpress platform for free?

Use a standard Wordpress Blog as your landing page and a Forum inside your Wordpress blog using a free WP-Forum plugin, then registration to your forum will be approved after user completes the purchase of your membership, you can use any external eCommerce tool to manage the mermerships and then just add them manually after confirming the sale. In the forum you can grant access to certain forums for membership levels Beginner, Medium, Advanced, etc, etc...

Any tool that can manage the membership payment will work, just redirect them to it, if im not wrong Paypal have some merchant tools to do that. (if you use paypal to receive the payment for your memberships)
