Hi, First for build a good looking website is about analyzing the purpose of the website, what is your target audience & than you need to create the design go to some websites to get some reference from there or you know interface design. Then you code it and do that what the search engines preffrence.
First thing you need to do, is to structure your ideas. And after that to document, on what you actually could do for achieving that. Another important step is to see what other peoples on your niche did.
there are tons of sites out there that offer inspirations on what to gear your site towards just do a search for "creative websites" or something along those lines... there are also CSS galleries that have a large collection of websites...
Here is a list of CSS websites. Have a look and see what other peoples have done with css. http://www.e-maniacs.com/blog/2008/09/10/css-great-designs/
Content is key. Write for your target audience, not what you think will achieve ranking. Don't spam keywords - your keywords should amount to around 4% ish of your page. Learn XTHML & CSS - don't use pagebuilding software (except maybe Dreamweaver). Learn about accessibility - make your page easy to navigate. Also 'Learning Web Design' by Jennifer Niederst Robbins and 'CSS - The Definitive Guide' by Eric Meyer are 2 fantastic books that a lot of people use.
Just so you know this is a very very broad topic. It all depends on what type of site your building, your targeted audience, and what the site is going to be used for. But for any site below are some of the most important keys: Great Content Updated Content Great Navigation System Good Color Scheme Color scheme is not nearly as important as the other ones, although if your site is hard on a persons eyes they won't be there long. But you need to have great content that makes your site different from that of your competitions or will make people want to you read your site instead of someone elses. Make sure you update that content so people have a reason to come back. And as far as the navigation, this is probally one of the most important not just for users to be able to get around your site, but also for search bots to be able to cache and index ALL of your pages not just some of them. The easier a bot can get around your pages the easier and better your site will rank.
Our advice is : 1) Be relevant to the subject and content rich 2) Use simple yet catchy designs 3) Use eye friendly colors, fonts and images 4) Provide easy navigation among the pages 5) Present the content in a priority basis 4) Small is beautiful, so don't make a mess out of the contents images etc.. Hope it helps...
