How to bring visitors back to a website which has been abandoned?

Hi, so, say a website has just totally stopped getting visitors. Mainly due to lack of posting, etc. Does anyone have any good ideas on how the owner of the website would best go about bringing back its former visitors, other than the obvious thing of starting posting on the blog again? (which I am going to be doing)

I'm planning on starting a competition as soon as possible, which I've already got sponsorship for, but obviously, I need people to enter it!

So any ideas on how I can bring people back, so I have a decent amount of entrants?

Thanks very much, I'm sure it will help the rest of the forum, and it'll definitely help me!

I'll pass out +reps to everyone, obviously. :)

add more but new content and use social media to promote the new added pages also use interlinking to lead the visitor to the other pages of your site i.e. old pages he might find relevant ..good luck

If you add your competition to loquax.co.uk , people will definitely enter . Would be better if you had a great prize, maybe with a topical theme like an event (sporting, musical) which is taking place.

You say you plan on bringing people back. Did you capture their details before through a squeeze page or other method or are you just hoping to get previous visitors back?

Easy: Start consistently producing new content again. Once you're doing that, you can start focusing on things like link building.

If you have there contact information, i.e. emails, give them a reason why you have been away for so long and explain how you're now back with a BANG! Post some awesome content, get some action going, give them a good reason to check out what's hot on your blog...Come back from the dead!

Have you thought about running a retargeting campaign? It's pretty simple - it works by placing a snippet of code on your site that keeps track of visitors who leave without converting and then uses that info to display your ads to them as they surf the web. It's a proven way to encourage visitors to come back, so it might be a good fit with what you're looking for.

Competition is a great idea. As Mr "events" suggested, you need to add your competition to freebies websites to attract visitors. Are you from the UK? If so, I can give you the Top12 competition website addresses. Let me know if you need this.

In order to bring some visitors:
    • Get somebody to submit your RSS to the top 100 aggregator directories (some DPers are offering this service)
    • Create a profile/bio and be active on Deviantart and Flickr; interact with people
    • Exchange links with other art websites
    • Are there any popular forums within your niche? Add your sig and be active there
    • Stretch to some budget and submit your site to a few top paid directories in your niche (go for the directories that do not offer free submissions)

You have to start adding new fresh content again and inviting people back. Usually the long tedious way works best.

Add new content then you start optimizing it. If your site gets into the top surely you will have traffic. Just keep updating you blog.

What you have to do is send your msg to them and try building site reputation again.
